Modern Physics is heavily calculus-based physics course designed for upper level physics majors. The principle objectives are:
- Understand the fundamental concepts of special relativity and beginning quantum mechanics
- Study application of these principle to simple cases in atomic and nuclear physics
Textbooks
- Tipler and Llewellyn, Modern Physics, 4th ed, Freeman & Co./Worth (2005).
- K. Krane, Modern Physics, 2nd ed., New York John Wiley and Sons (1996).
- R. Eisberg, Fundamental of Modern Physics 3rd ed., New York John Wiley and Sons (1963).

Grading Policy
The grade you earn in this class will be based upon the assignment types listed below. The maximum number of class points is 50. A grading scale is given below for your reference. You can use the score below to determine your guaranteed grade:
The faculty may alter grades to react class participation, improvement, effort and other qualitative measures of performance.
Attendance
Attendance for all lectures is strongly encouraged. A large amount of material will be covered in a short amount of time. Successful completion of this course will require a sustained effort on your part to keep up with the material and understand the topics as they are presented. You are strongly encouraged to read the indicated portion of the text prior to the lecture.
Weekly quizzes
Each Friday we will start with a 10 minute quiz (worth 10 quiz points) over the material covered in lecture and homework for the previous week. Your homework is your ticket to take the quiz so you must submit your homework. The scores on these quizzes will be added together, and divided by number of quizzes. Ten percent from quiz score will be add to exam score for extra. Note that there will be NO cheat sheets or calculators for these quizzes. I will expect you to have this stuff in your head.
Homework
Homework problems will be assigned every thursday, and homework papers will be collected in my office on thursday from 9-11 am. Students are permitted and encouraged to work together on homework assignments with the goal of learning from each other. However, the homework paper you hand in must represent your own work. Copying someone else’s solution is not permitted. Late homework will not be accepted. Homework papers will be graded, and solutions to the homework problems will be available on the web.
Exams
Midterms are closed book and closed notes. The primary sources of material for the final exam are: (1) material presented in class, (2) quizzes (3) homework and (4) handout.
